Taiwanese electronics firm Luxpro Technology plans to launch litigation against Apple regarding an iPod shuffle-inspired music player. This is an extension of an existing legal dispute between the two firms. Apple fired the first shot in 2005, when it sued to stop Luxpro shipping two MP3 players that looked exactly like the iPod shuffle. ....

Buying mp3 players: iPod vs generic
Posted Saturday, December 30, 2006 3:04:50 PM by Blog57 Team
What's the difference between an MP3 player and an iPod? (See the last paragraph.) Is the no-name MP3 player I saw in the hardware store worth buying? (Sure, as long as you know what to look for when you're buying.) Why is it so much cheaper than an iPod? (It holds fewer songs, which means it's not really a bargain.) ....

Ready, set, play: Zune challenging iconic iPod

Can Microsoft harness cool in a 5-ounce music player? And can it do it in the long shadow of the iPod, which has charted a course in cool for five years? The company will find out starting Tuesday, when the chunky, fits-in-your-pocket Zune music player goes on sale in the U.S. for $250. The Zune sets off on a path filled with the corpses of upstart music players that have gone before, a trail of survival that ends with toppling the seemingly untouchable iPod. And while much has been written about what's inside the Zune — 30 gigabytes of storage, an FM radio, the ability to interact with other Zunes wirelessly — the first test of the music player will be what's on the outside. How does it feel in your hand? What's the screen like? Would you want to be seen in public with one? The outside appearance starts with color....

Microsoft takes on iPod

Microsoft has finally presented a challenger to Apple's ubiquitous iPod digital music players. It's bigger and heavier and more difficult to use. But the 30-gigabyte, one-size-fits-all Zune, which is due to hit stores this month priced at about $250, was actually invented in Redmond, Wash., and for that reason Apple (Charts) should be quaking in its designed-in-California boots, even though it owns the digital music business. ....

Minority Report: Will the iPhone save the iPod?

While some worry the iPod will go the way of the Tamagotchi, Seb Janacek believes the iconic device may merely be in transition - and could prosper in its next iteration, the iPhone. Here is the second instalment of a two-part series. (Read part one.) Rumour-mongering is a beloved pastime of the Apple faithful and currently the talk is all about the next generation of the iPod - a mobile phone/MP3 player hybrid speculatively referred to as the iPhone. A fall in iPod sales for two consecutive quarters led some to predict the death of the ubiquitous digital music player. This is certainly a premature prediction, though the product does need to evolve, and the iPhone is seen by many as the answer to sustaining sales. It's not just forum posters, bloggers and journalists who are excited about the iPhone....

The Apple iPod is five and shrinking
Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 3:06:50 AM by Blog57 Team
Last October, the Apple iPod turned five. It is one of the most successful products in the history of gadgets—more than 68 million units sold in five years valued at $14 billion. Despite the spate of rivals and also-runs, the iPod accounts for 70 percent of the digital music player market. It is the world's most popular digital music player. Largely because of the iPod, Apple's stock has surged in the last five years. The iPod was introduced on October 23, 2001. "With iPod, listening to music will never be the same again," Apple CEO Steve Jobs beamed then. With the rise in iPod sales, Apple's stock has risen to more than $79 a share from just $9 five years ago, a jump of nearly nine times. The iPod accounts for 40 percent of Apple Computer's $19-billion revenues and provides the Cupertino company possibly up to 50-percent profit margin....

Apple's tiny new IPod Shuffle on sale now
Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 3:30:31 AM by Blog57 Team
Apple Computer Inc. is selling the new version of the iPod Shuffle starting today after missing the October release for its lowest-priced music player. California-based Apple announced earlier this week that the $79 shuffle would go on sale today. It's available in stores, online at http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/ or by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE. The smallest iPod at 1.62-inches long, the Shuffle holds up to 240 songs. Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs unveiled the Shuffle and updated models of the pencil-thin Nano and video iPod in September to help spur holiday orders and fend off competition from Microsoft Corp. Apple may sell 15.6 million iPods this quarter, topping the record 14 million sold in the 2005 holiday season, said UBS AG analyst Benjamin Reitzes in New York....
