Likewise, songs purchased elsewhere aren't easily playable on iPods," Schiffman reports. Schiffman reports, "The plaintiff is seeking unspecified damages and other relief. The court denied Apple's motion to dismiss the complaint on Dec. 20." Full article here. From Apple's 10-K for Fiscal Year Ended September 30, 2006: Tucker v. Apple Computer, Inc. The iTunes store, the world's leading digital music outlet with more than 1.5 billion songs sold since its launch, had previously included Latin as a music genre, but company officials said customers were asking for more Latin content. | | | Programmer unlocks iPod-iTunes exclusive linkage | | Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 3:15:44 PM by Blog57 Team | | A 22-year-old programmer has picked the lock which guards the exclusive relationship between Apple's iPod players and its iTunes online music and video store, his company said. Norwegian-born Jon Lech Johansen found a way for rival MP3 players to download songs or shows from iTunes and for digital content from other vendors to be played on iPods, according to his San Francisco firm DoubleTwist Ventures. DoubleTwist managing director Monique Farantzos insisted the firm was doing nothing illegal, and said they plan to license the technology to Apple competitors "in the near future." "What it does is it fools iTunes into thinking that whatever you're synching to your computer is an iPod," Farantzos told AFP. "And it fools the iPod into thinking content came from iTunes." Apple Computer engineered iPod players and iTunes as an exclusive pairing of hardware and content, shutting out rival MP3 players and online stores....

How can companies identify when the timing is right? There's no better example than Apple's iPod. Apple's iPod – now celebrating its five year anniversary – gets the credit for revolutionizing the music industry. In the new book The Perfect Thing, author Steve Levy says the iPod “set the technology world, the business world, and especially the music industry on its head." He's right. And so are many others that have made similar claims. But not necessarily for the reasons they suggest. The Apple wasn't a revolutionary product. In fact, most of its capabilities existed in other products before it launched in 2001. Yet it caused a revolution....
